What is the Daniel Fast?
The Daniel Fast is a 21-day, Bible-based partial fast inspired by the prophet Daniel, focusing on spiritual growth by abstaining from meat, dairy, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods, while eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds to draw closer to God through prayer and meditation. It's a plant-based style diet that emphasizes spiritual discipline over weight loss, based on Daniel's choice to eat only vegetables and water for 10 days and later for three weeks, as described in the Book of Daniel (Daniel 10:2-3).
- Vegetables: All kinds.
- Fruits: All kinds, including juices.
- Whole Grains: Oats, brown rice, quinoa, barley.
- Legumes: Beans, lentils, peas, peanuts, nuts, and seeds.
- Oils: High-quality oils like olive, canola, and coconut oil.
- Water: The primary drink, along with herbal teas and unsweetened almond/coconut milk.
- Seasonings: Herbs, spices, and vinegar.
What to Avoid
- Meats: All meat, poultry, and fish.
- Dairy: Milk, cheese, yogurt, butter.
- Sweeteners: Sugar, honey, maple syrup, chocolate, candy.
- Leavened Foods: Yeast bread, processed grains.
- Beverages: Alcohol, soda, coffee, energy drinks, and sweetened drinks.
- Processed Foods: Refined grains, fried foods, and foods with artificial flavors/preservatives.
- Spiritual Focus: To deny fleshly desires, seek God, and develop spiritual discipline.
- Duration: Typically 21 days, but can be adjusted (e.g., 10 or 3 weeks). We'll begin with 10 days, with an option to continue onto 21 days.
- Action: Dedicate the time to prayer, reading the Bible, and seeking God's guidance.
